Camp Shane - Diet Plan Outline

Camp Shane is a weight loss camp for children and young adults who are overweight and obese. The camp teaches the basics of lifestyle change and balanced nutrition based on the recommendations of the American Dietetic Association (Food Guide Pyramid). The main focus of the camp's activities is exercise. The rates and sessions for the 2003 season are as follows:

SESSION 1: June 18th – July 7th- 3 weeks- $2,800
SESSION 2: June 18th – July 28th- 6 weeks-$4,400
SESSION 3: June 18th – August 16th-9 weeks-$6,000
SESSION 4: July 7th – August 16th-6 weeks-$4,400
SESSION 5: July 28th – August 16th-3 weeks-$2,500

Camp Shane is much more than a summer camp where overweight and obese kids can lose weight. It is a place where kids can support each other and change the course of their lives without the pressure of the outside world and the sometimes-cruel pressure applied by other kids.

Camp Shane is about as good as it gets in the world of weight loss. The cost is steep, but if it leads to a fundamental change in the way your child thinks about eating and exercise, it could be the best investment you make in your child's future.

The only fault I can find in a concept like Camp Shane is that it is a cocoon where overweight individuals don't deal with the day to day pressures of the real world while they are struggling to change the way they live. It is probably better and less expensive to make the changes necessary at home. If you don't learn self control without someone looking over your shoulder, long-term weight loss is almost impossible to maintain.
